Car wrecker fined for selling parts without a licence

A Perth car wrecker has been fined $7,500 in the Perth Magistrates Court for selling
car parts without a licence.

Nevin Inni of Banksia Grove was also ordered to pay costs of $535 after he failed
to appear in Court on Friday (25 March 2011) to answer the charge and was
convicted in his absence.

Lawyers for Consumer Protection told the Court that Mr Inni had purchased about 41 vehicles between February 2009 and January 2011 and placed about
400 advertisements in the Quokka magazine advertising parts for sale.

During this period, Mr Inni was not the holder of a motor vehicle dealer’s licence authorising him to buy vehicles for the purpose of dismantling them and selling the spare parts – a breach of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said unlicensed dealing in vehicle parts presents a potential danger to consumers.

“Spare parts being sold by unlicensed wreckers may be of a substandard quality which can have safety implications. Further, the licensing system helps to ensure that those in the industry are of good character and have sufficient resources to conduct this type of business,” Ms Driscoll said.

“Unlicensed wrecking is a common method of disposing of parts from stolen vehicles. Licensed wreckers are required to keep detailed records of vehicles purchased and dismantled. Backyard wreckers do not keep this information, making it difficult to track the origin of the parts to determine whether they have been acquired by illegal means.

“The primary purpose of the licensing system is to protect WA consumers from the possible consequences of doing business with unscrupulous dealers and to instil consumer confidence in the motor vehicle industry.”
